On their way home from an Oswayo Valley Sports Boosters fundraiser three summers ago, two Oswayo Valley High School students asked their driver, Mike Filer, why OV couldn’t have a nice track like other schools.
The next day, Filer called then Oswayo Valley School District Athletic Director Bruce Kemp, who had the superintendent and several interested families out looking at the old, cinder track within a few days. Shortly after, a community organization called T.R.A.C.K. (Together Rebuilding: Alumni, Community, & Kids) was born.
Bruce Kemp is now the president of T.R.A.C.K., which currently has 15-25 regularly active members who are responsible for raising funds to resurface the track.
The group’s current fundraiser is a cabin raffle. For $50, anyone can purchase two chances to win the cabin, which is currently being constructed about six miles up Eleven Mile Road in Oswayo Township. Kemp said that the cabin is mostly surrounded by farm land.
Materials for the cabin are being purchased as raffle tickets are sold. According to Kemp, the property where the cabin sits was purchased for $15,000 and so far $39,000 has been spent on materials. Labor has been donated by T.R.A.C.K. members with the help of experienced builders Dave Ahl and Scott Gustin, who have donated their time as well. Ahl has also found a heating and plumbing contractor willing to donate both his time and materials to install a heating system.
“The cabin is just beautiful. We’ve been working on it really hard for the last five or six months. We’re going to be starting the front porch soon,” said Filer.
The cabin is 1,100 square feet on half an acre. It has two bedrooms, water, gas, electric hook-ups and septic. The winner will also receive a one year hunting lease valued at $600.
According to Kemp, T.R.A.C.K. wants to raise all the funds so the Oswayo Valley School District won’t have to contribute any money.
The cabin drawing will be held July 4, 2011 and will be based on the Pennsylvania Lottery Big Four Evening Number. If not all tickets are sold and no one has the July 4 Big Four Number, the next night’s number will be used, and so on, until there is a winner.
Two numbers, or chances to win, are on each $50 ticket. For tickets, call Mike and Michelle Filer at 814-698-2135, Bruce Kemp at 697-7210, or Dane Surra at 697-7323.
